Profile

John Hong is Adjunct Associate Professor of Architecture at the Graduate School of Design.  He teaches in the architecture core design studio sequence.  His firm, SINGLE speed DESIGN, co-founded with partner Jinhee Park, focuses on the convergence of form and content:  Instead of additively layering issues of site, structure, program, history, and sustainability, these disciplines are simultaneously explored so that minimum form can take maximum effect.  His firm’s work includes institutional, commercial, and residential programs that bridge human and urban scales with sustainable design.

Along with receiving many design awards including the AIA Young Architects Award (2006), an Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction Award (2005), The Metropolis Next Generation Prize (2004), and six AIA/Boston Society of Architects awards (2003-2006), his firm’s work has being published in major media such as Architectural Record, Metropolis Magazine, Dwell Magazine, The New Yorker, and PBS.  He has lectured and exhibited at many universities and conferences including venues at the Harvard GSD, Ohio State University, and Seoul National University, as well as several national design conferences.

John Hong received a Master in Architecture with Distinction from the Harvard GSD and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture with Honors from the University of Virginia. He is an active AIA member and serves on the editorial board for ArchitectureBoston magazine.  He is also a LEED accredited professional.
