OMA

The Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) is a Rotterdam based firm concerned with contemporary architecture, urbanism and general cultural issues.

Founded in 1975, the office entered a series of major competitions, Parc de La Villette in 1982, in 1989 the Très Grande Bibliotheque and in 1993 the library of Jussieu, all in Paris. OMA realised several projects. The work ranges from private residences to large scale urban planning: 1991, the Villa dall'Ava overlooking the Eiffel Tower and Nexus Housing, two apartment-blocks in Fukuoka, Japan, are completed. In 1992 the Kunsthal and its Museum Park in Rotterdam are opened. Notably OMA planned Euralille, a business and civic centre hosting the major high-speed train hub in the north of France. In the planning process of the possible relocation of the Netherlands' main airport off-shore, OMA was asked to consider what positive impact such an operation could have on the identity of the Netherlands.

At the start of the new century the office is active in the USA with a series of Prada stores, the new Seattle Public Library and the IIT Campus Centre in Chicago. OMA is engaged in a series of Museum projects and just realized the Guggenheim and Guggenheim Hermitage in Las Vegas, while the Whitney Museum in New York and Museum Ludwig in Cologne are being planned.

The main activities in Europe at this moment are the construction of a concert hall for Porto, Portugal, the construction of a new city centre for Almere, Netherlands, and the new Netherlands Embassy in Berlin, Germany.

ORGANIZATION
The Office for Metropolitan Architecture operates as a partnership with two offices, in Rotterdam and New York.

OMA Rotterdam, led by partners Rem Koolhaas, Ole Scheeren and Ellen van Loon, focuses attention on Europe and Asia. Currently, the office is engaged in the design of a massive, six million square foot headquarters building for China Central Television (CCTV) in Beijing. In addition, the new Netherlands embassy in Berlin and the Porto Concert Hall are soon to be opened.

OMA New York, led by partner Joshua Ramus, is the center of the firm’s American operations. The New York atelier has three substantial projects whose completion is expected within the next year, including the Illinois Institute of Technology Campus Center, the new Seattle Central Library, and the Prada Beverly Hills “Epicenter” Store. The New York office is also engaged in the design of the Dallas Multiform Theater and the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts Master Plan.

OMAs most recent realizations include the Prada New York “Epicenter” Store, the Lehman Maupin Gallery in New York and the Guggenheim and Guggenheim-Hermitage Museums in Las Vegas.

The Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) is a firm practicing contemporary architecture, urbanism and cultural analysis. OMA employs eighty architects and designers of multinational origin.

AMO
A new branch concerned with research will collect forces from media, finance, technology, and art to consult in the architectural thinking where strategy and concept have a higher importance than realisation. The AMO will analyse the relationship between built structures, human behaviour, commerce and culture.
