Profile
Thomas Schroepfer is Associate Professor of Architecture. He teaches architecture design studios and courses on materials and construction. Recent and current studio and course offerings include Introduction to Design and Visual Studies in Architecture 1, Introduction to Design and Visual Studies in Architecture 2, Architectural Design, Materials and Construction: An Introduction to Composition, Techniques, and Strategies, Materials and Construction 2: Building with Steel and Concrete, and Smart Materials. Schroepfer's doctoral dissertation at the GSD examined the impact of globalization on contemporary design dynamics and material and construction practices. This ongoing research has also been the topic of a number of his publications including Global Design and Building Practice 1 and 2. He is a registered architect in Germany and has been associated, in addition to his own practice, with several architectural practices in Berlin, among them Studio Daniel Libeskind, as well as with design and building firms involved with large-scale projects in Europe. While working as an architect for the Research and Development Department of Hochtief Group, the currently world's largest building firm, he was also an editor of FuE Forum, a quarterly international building research publication. Schroepfer's own projects have received awards and recognitions, including from the Union Internationale des Architectes (UIA). Since at Harvard, he was awarded multiple Dean's Grants from the GSD and other institutions including the Harvard University Asia Center and the Real Estate Academic Initiative at Harvard University (REAI) to support his projects and research. He has published and lectured widely on his work that has been exhibited in the US, Europe, and Asia. Schroepfer's current research titled Material Design explores materials and methods of construction as well as sustainability in architecture. It has led to a number of built projects including most recently Bamboo Oblique for the 2009 Gwangju Design Biennale in Korea as well as journal and book publications including "Integrating Material Culture" in Journal of Architectural Education and Birkhäuser Publisher's Principles of Construction book series for that he is a subject editor. His book titled Material Design under the same publisher is forthcoming in Spring 2010. Schroepfer received concurrently a Bachelor of Architecture from The Cooper Union New York, a Diplom-Ingenieur in Architecture from the University of the Arts Berlin, and subsequently a Master of Architecture with distinction and a Doctor of Design from the GSD. |
