Current Research Initiatives
2007- Dirty Work: Landscape in the Non-formal City
Partner: John Beardsley, Art Historian, Senior Lecturer, Graduate School of Design, Harvard University
'Dirty Work' looks at built or projected landscape interventions in the most dire circumstances of squatter settlements. The current focus is on favela upgrading projects in Central and South America.
2006- ‘TransUrban’ Interdisciplinary Research Group
Partners: Thomas Schroepfer, Assistant Professor in Architecture, Graduate School of Design, Harvard University
Limin Hee, Assistant Professor in Urban Design, National University of Singapore
TransUrban critically examines the most advanced built examples of sustainable city planning in the world and tries to derive new parameters for future city planning and design. The first case examined was the 5,000 people city expansion ‘Vauban’ in Freiburg, Germany. The new city quarter  ‘Solar City Linz, Pichling’ in Austria is currently under review.
2006- Low Cost Green Roof Initiative
Partner: Katrin Scholz-Barth, Environmental Engineer, Washington DC
The initiative installed several types of a low cost green roof on the roof of the Graduate School of Design (2006, 2007). The GSD roof now serves as a living experiment used for research and teaching in the school. Vegetation growth and overall performance is closely monitored by the initiative.
