Katy Barkan received her Bachelor of Arts in Comparative Literature at Barnard College and her Master of Architecture at Harvard Graduate School of Design. Her thesis work, “Grounds for Architecture” on architectural strategies for water level changes in the Amazon, was selected for exhibition at the 12th International Architecture Biennale in Venice.

 

Until recently, Katy has been working at Architecture Research Office in New York on a variety of design and research projects. She was the project manager for the forthcoming study for the General Services Administration and the National Endowment for the Arts on “Design Excellence in Federal Works”.  She has also worked on multiple upcoming ARO projects, including a recently completed project in Midtown Manhattan.  Before turning her attention to architecture, Katy worked at Artforum and Bookforum Magazines in New York.

 

She has been an invited critic at Rhode Island School of Design, The Cooper Union, and Pratt Institute and has worked closely with MOS, Plasma Studio (London), Estudio A0 (Quito), and Preston Scott Cohen.
