Career Advice from Your Peers

Harvard University, Graduate School of Design

The following advice was offered by students on their Graduating Student Surveys shortly before Commencement.  At the end of each quote you will find the degree that the student received.

EXPERIENCE

"There is no substitute for experience. Attempt to find the most diverse kinds of professional experience prior to graduation.” MLAUD

“Plan ahead. If you want to do IDP (Intern Development Program), start now and keep track of your hours (I didn’t). Know the benefits and drawbacks of working for different kinds of firms, and how lifestyle (outside of work) may factor into these decisions.” MArch I

“The world is going to be more global. Multicultural experience is an important criterion when seeking a job.” DDesS

“Work hard at getting good summer internships, including fellowships.” MLA I

“Work for the biggest names possible for as long as you can stomach it. Who you know counts far more than what you know in this field. Really.” MDesS

DESIGN SHEETS/PORTFOLIOS

“Create your design sheets early.” MDesS

“Make a beautiful portfolio and really take some time to personalize it.” MLA I

“Get started on your portfolio early! It takes longer than you think.” MLA I

CREATE A PROFESSIONAL NETWORK OF CONTACTS

“Recognize the importance of personal contact.” MArch II

“Talk to as many different people as possible – potential employers, faculty, peers, alumni.” MArch I

“Use your own network as much as possible. Meet people during conferences, events, workshops…have strong ties with professional life.” DDesS

“It’s all about who you know & the contacts you can make at the GSD (both professors and students) are extremely valuable.” MArch II

JOB SEARCH TIPS

“Start looking early and do not get discouraged by rejections. Take advantage of opportunities at the Career Fair.” MAUD

“Develop a strong portfolio and actively pursue job opportunities or firms that are of interest to you.” MAUD

“Start early and apply to as many places as possible. Make connections with speakers and professors.” MUP

“Research what your salary should be. If they offer you the job, don’t accept it right away. Take a day or two to think about it. Take a look at the package they offer you and see what you can negotiate. More vacation time, paid time off, bonus, etc. From my experience, the negotiation ends half way between what you want and what they offer. Remember that you are signing a contract and should always read the terms before signing.” MDesS
