Peter Steinbrueck, FAIA is principal of Steinbrueck Urban Strategies, LLC, and former three-term Seattle City Councilmember.  Steinbrueck Urban Strategies, LLC, provides mission-driven strategic planning advice to public, institutional, and private sector clients interested in advancing system-wide approaches to sustainability and master planning.  He is visiting lecturer at the University of Washington College of the Built Environment, popular public speaker, radio commentator, and writer.

Recent projects have included Sustainable Development Guidelines for the City of San Diego plans to revitalize Philadelphia’s central Delaware riverfront, and development of a sustainable master plan for Seattle Children’s Hospital.  Steinbrueck provided strategic direction to the Children’s leadership team in the development of a 20 year master plan for the hospital’s 600 bed future facility. Children’s master plan, comprising  2.4 million square feet of facility over 22 acres, not only achieves a high degree of integration with the surrounding single family neighborhood, but sets aggressive goals for sustainability and environmental stewardship, including adoption of the Architecture 2030 Challenge.

The new “Energy –Climate Era,” as Thomas L. Friedman describes in his recent book, Hot, Flat and Crowded, will require extraordinary political leadership to bring about the global changes we know now are urgently necessary. The Loeb Fellowship year at GSD will provide Steinbrueck the opportunity for concentrated research on U.S. urban policy and environmental challenges at the national level.  Steinbrueck plans to study the politics, principles and best practices of sustainability among cities leading change in the U.S., and examine how to advance these strategies for greatest impact.
