A significant portion of Monroe County's history and much of its prosperity concerns recreation. As early as the 1840's, tourism and resort hotels had become a focus for urbanites seeking to experience country life. In the twentieth century, with its changes away from industry and agriculture, the resort industry and recreation became the County's main source of income. Today, this still evolving &emdash;but possibly waning&emdash; industry continues to play the leading role in the economy of the region. In order to prosper, Monroe County must consider how to best utilize its valuable landscape resources. Part of this is conservation --protecting critical assets.

Another part is programming and developing some of these areas for passive and active recreational use. 'Commercial Recreation Potential' shows, in blue, areas that should be considered for additional commercial and public recreation. An example of land use programming for recreational opportunities can be seen in the woods around Pimple Hill where snowmobile trails have been located throughout the forest. More recreation programming must be done. Also, because of the uniqueness of the natural landscape of Monroe County, there are many opportunities for the relatively new industry of eco-tourism. These opportunities can positively affect the economic future of the County. |
