Impacts: Demographic
What Differences Might the Alternatives Bring About?

The current population of Monroe County is about 100,000 persons. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania forecasts that this population will nearly double by the year 2020. It is useful to know if each alternative can adequately meet the demands of this population, and if it can substantially exceed this demand. None of the Alternatives was designed with the intention of limiting Monroe County's growth, or arrived at any particular population capacity.

Each of the Alternative Futures for Monroe County can easily accomodate the expected population increase. From the perspectives of the Townships and the County, this is good, because it allows choice of where to focus development.

Ranked in order of population capacity (from least to greatest), the Alternatives are:

Park

300,000

Township

300,000

Southern

350,000

Spine

350,000

Build-Out

400,000

Plan-Trend

600,000

Note that the Plan-Trend can accommodate more people than Build-Out because it constructs new sewers. The Build-Out presumes an inability to keep infrastructure investment and construction in pace with development demand.
