GSD 08 Platform book launched in conjunction with exhibition

GSD 08 Platform, a publication of student work

The GSD 08 Platform book and corresponding exhibition attempt to formulate prevalent tendencies and coherences among the many that currently operate within the Harvard Graduate School of Design. The content groupings are the site of relations between a diverse range of projects and domains of research, developing affinities between projects, events, and writings. The amalgam of these issues reveals a partial section of ideas and interests—an archaeology of the present state of the School. More than a mere recording of the achievements of students and faculty, lectures, publications, and exhibitions, the book and exhibition are an unraveling of an order—of new, intrinsic experiences and discoveries.

Following the November 7 book launch reception, a panel discussion, On Conjecture, was held in Piper Auditorium. Mohsen Mostafavi, Dean of the Graduate School of Design, in collaboration with Peter Galison, the Joseph Pellegrino University Professor in History of Science and Physics at Harvard University, as well as a number of GSD faculty members, presented the case for the importance of experimentation and speculation in contemporary design practice. The discussion was moderated by Sanford Kwinter, Visiting Associate Professor in Architecture. Participants included: Preston Scott Cohen, Gerald M. McCue Professor in Architecture and Chair of the Department of Architecture; Margaret Crawford, Professor of Urban Design and Planning Theory; Erika Naginski, Associate Professor of Architectural History; and Chris Reed, Design Critic in Landscape Architecture.
