Exploratory and collaborative in spirit, the work of this studio investigates the architectural potentials of solid state lighting by taking apart the component technologies of the fluorescent light fixture. By working with the phosphors that coat the inner surfaces of the fluorescent tube and correct the color of the light, the students have re-imagined this archetypal product as an integral part of architecture -- a precursor that suggests what will be possible to achieve with organic light emitting devices. As is often the case in design research, in exploring the architectural applications of OLED's, the studio work also yielded an unexpected by-product which in itself is of great interest. The luminous materials produced in this studio not only provide an accurate simulation of the effects of OLED's, they also open new possibilities for architectural applications of phosphor technologies, which in turn, point to new directions of research and product development.
