Environments of Opportunity: Redevelopment on the Waterfront of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain

During the spring semester of 2000 an urban design studio was conducted, dealing with proposals for the redevelopment of a portion of the waterfront in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain. This book provides documentation of the studio findings, including a thematic description of the studio context, preliminary studies of other waterfront developments of interest, an analysis of economic trends and policy directions for the Island of Gran Canaria, of which the waterfront is a part, and the project proposals themselves. Public improvements of this magnitude cannot be viewed in isolation and are, indeed, examples of a more general class of design and redevelopment problem that has been tackled elsewhere. Many maritime cities, all over the world, have found themselves with obsolete port facilities and increasing pressure to capitalize on opportunities for redevelopment there. Moreover, these opportunities, in turn, are strongly determined both by the economic social and cultural composition of the cities concerned and by the potential contribution that waterfront redevelopment might make to the cities. In short, an exercise of this kind must look to the city and sub-region involved, as well as engaging in a considerable amount of programmatic and creative invention.
