DATA SOURCES

The GSD seeks to identify and examine pre-existing data sources to determine the feasibility of utilizing existing databases to recommend an appropriate and cost-effective research design. An RFP was issued on May 18, 2000 with responses due on June 2, 2000, to select a contractor to conduct a review of data sources. The RFP was listed on the CBDNet for five consecutive days, listing electronically for 15 days.

Of five responses received, two firms were selected to work as partners in obtaining and reviewing available databases. In August of 2000, Abt Associates, Inc. and The Compass Group LLC began work on this assignment.

Reconnaissance continues in the effort to determine the potential usefulness of data sources on multifamily operating costs (see Work Plan, page 16). Basic information on selected data sources of operating costs is contained in the Progress Report, providing summary characteristics in a comparative chart.

Initial runs of data are being shared as they become available. Discussions with Focus Group and Public Meeting participants provide us with the critical opportunity to pursue further inquiry of the data regarding questions that arise.
