Timing

Each academic year, there are three time periods in which you can receive your degree. You may participate in the Commencement festivities in May regardless of which degree timeline you choose to follow.

In order to graduate in a given time period, the following must be completed:

  • The Dissertation Acceptance Certificate (DAC) must be signed by the committee
  • The dissertation must be uploaded and approved
  • See below regarding details for each

November Grads

  • Degree Vote is generally mid-October (for AY2017-2018, this is October 18, 2017)
  • Dissertation upload must be completed 2 business days prior
  • November degree candidates are not charged fall tuition. However, if students do not complete the dissertation and defense in time for the fall degree vote, they will be retroactively charged fall tuition

March Grads

  • Degree Vote is generally early February (for AY2017-2018, this is February 7, 2018)
  • Dissertation upload must be completed 2 business days prior.
  • March degree candidates are not charged spring tuition. However, if students do not complete the dissertation and defense in time for the degree vote, they will be retroactively charged spring tuition.

May Grads

  • Degree Vote is generally mid-May (for AY2017-2018, this is May 17, 2018)
  • Dissertation upload must be completed 2 business days prior

* In the event of extenuating circumstances, the program director or advisor may request that the degree be voted on conditionally with the DDes committee, pending the remaining materials. The deadline would then be extended to 2 business days before the Full Faculty degree vote meeting (which occurs 1-2 weeks later, except in May when it occurs the following Monday).

Room Booking and Announcements

Once a date for the defense has been agreed upon by the committee, please contact Liz Thorstenson or Margaret Moore de Chicojay for assistance booking a room.

Once a room is confirmed, you may craft an announcement which Liz or Margaret can share with the GSD community and anyone else as requested.

Dissertation Acceptance Certificate

The dissertation acceptance certificate (DAC) is one of the last things you will need to prepare for the upload of your final thesis.

Please provide the information below via email to Liz Thorstenson:

  • Your name and the title of your thesis
    • Please note, this information is used for the listing in the commencement bulletin.
  • Names and titles of all members of your committee. Please double check spellings, especially for committee members who are not part of the GSD community)
    • The DAC must be signed by your committee members. Often this is after the defense, sometimes after the edits to your dissertation are finalized. This is at the discretion of the committee
    • The DAC is uploaded with your dissertation, and remains in our records

Once the DAC is signed by your committee, please return it to the Advanced Studies office (40 Kirkland, 1A-B). We will scan it and retain the hard copy for your records. We will send you the scanned copy for inclusion in your upload (see below).

*Requests should be received at least 2 business days in advance of the date the form is needed.

Contact Liz Thorstenson (617-496-8258) with questions regarding the DAC.

DASH/ETD/Upload of Dissertation Document

In Spring 2016, we launched the GSD portal for submission of your dissertation.

  • This puts your dissertation directly into DASH and centralizes the process. You’ll find there are informative links (AKA “sticky notes”) throughout.
  • Be sure to include the signature page (DAC) as page 1, and the title page as page 2. The DAC will be suppressed when it is eventually viewed online.
  • Uploads must be completed 2 business days in advance of the degree vote to allow time for approval.

Contact Margaret Moore de Chicojay (617) 495-2337 with questions regarding the Dissertation Upload.
