Barbara Stein Studio Projects

Prototype 1: Perspective from Slope

Prototype 2: Side Elevation
Manufactured House and Topography
The premise of this project is that there are two potential topographies in manufactured housing: a topography outside the house, and a topography inside the house.

Manufactured houses are built on relatively flat sites. The project proposes a mechanism by which manufactured houses can be placed on sloping sites. This effectively opens up what has been "unbuildable land" for the manufactured house. This new siting requires more on-site building than required on a flat -site manufactured house, but the alternative is no building at all on this type of terrain.

(Excerpt from Student's Project Description)

The structural integrity of the chassis dictates the simple section of the mobile home. In order to differentiate programmed spaces, manufactured home designers have traditionally resorted to widening the unit, allowing for corridors and closeable rooms. Barbara Stein proposes that spatial differentiation may be achieved in section. She evades the limitations imposed by the chassis and the highway by focusing on the site. The mobile unit plugs into a small, two story permanent structure.
