The Gartenreich region was a designed landscape on a huge scale. In 1740, Prince Leopold III Friedrich Franz von Anhalt-Dessau became the region's ruler. He was greatly influenced by the agricultural and industrial developments in England and implemented his passion for progress, humanism and the Enlightenment within his principality.
