Computer Colored Films

Computer colored films (also known as "Colorized" or "Color Imaged" films) were a brief fad in the 1980's when some distributors of black and white films were looking for ways to market their films for commercial TV and cable. Some early attempts, such as It's a Wonderful Life and Yankee Doodle Dandy were appalling, and reaction, especially amongst film buffs was almost universally negative. False charges flew that the original films were being destroyed by crass commecialists, and even some legislation was passed to supposedly curb this practice. Actually it was a great fuss over nothing, as it wasn't the films that were being colorized it was video tapes of the films (as this was a video not a film technique). Many older black and white films were actually being restored and preserved, as a very good print was necessary prior to colorization. The bulk of movies that were eventually color imaged were often of the B-movie variety with little claim to great cinematography or lofty artistic intent. Although the classic films were generally avoided, some classics like Casablanca, King Kong and King's Row were color imaged with somewhat impressive results, and provide an interesting alternative to some familiar classics.
