Whither 7 Sumner Road

by Bob Angilly

One of the great mysteries at the GSD is the exact location of 7 Sumner Road. Once thought to be a mythical place, rumor has it that it is the "temporary" home of many of the GSD's administrative offices.

New students and visitors to the GSD have often expressed skepticism that such a place could exist at all, or that such a place must surely be in some part of Gund Hall. When told that 7 Sumner Road was the "little building out back," many have left in search of it and have never returned.

I wish to report, however, that I have actually been to this place and spoken with its inhabitants--who are in many ways like ourselves--and can relate the true route to 7 Sumner Road.

You leave Gund Hall by the northeast exit next to the cafeteria where you cross a broad brick patio next to the loading dock; before you is a vast expanse of grassy lawn. Avoild the lawn and proceed to the right along a red brick pathway that brings you past the loading dock to a concrete driveway. Turn left down the driveway, taking great care to avoid the large pools of oil and transmission fluid--as all the cars that park here need serious work. Avoid the path on the right, which would take you into Coolidge Hall. Proceed to the very end of the driveway which becomes a path that will take you to a small red brick building. By the doorway is a large concrete archway, obviously an artifact from some previous civilization. Proceed to the left up a small flight of steps and you have arrived at the doorway to 7 Sumner Road.

Now that the way has been discovered, steps should be taken to increase commerce between our two buildings. Perhabs the red brick pathway could be extended along the perimeter of the vast grassy lawn to the entryway of 7 Sumner Road, thus avoilding the perils of the concrete driveway. To make the pathway more distinctive, yellow bricks could be used, which would make it more visible, and would also make giving directions a lot more fun.
