New Geographies journal receives Graham Foundation grant

New Geographies, a journal of Design, Agency, Territory, founded and edited by Gareth Doherty, Rania Ghosn, El Hadi Jazairy, Antonio Petrov, Stephen Ramos and Neyran Turan at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, has been awarded a grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts. The grant is in support of Volume 5 “The Mediterranean” edited by Antonio Petrov, and volume 6 with a focus on the New Geographies Lab at the GSD. Volumes 2 and 3 of New Geographies were previously supported by a grant from the Graham Foundation.
New Geographies aims to examine the emergence of the geographic, a new but for the most part latent paradigm in design today—to articulate it and bring it to bear effectively on the social role of design. Through critical essays and design projects, New Geographies seeks to position design’s agency amidst concerns of scale, infrastructure, ecology, and globalization, with the “Geographic” condition reflecting a desire for a synthetic scalar practice that links attributes understood to be either separate from each other or external to the design disciplines, opening through that a range of technical, formal, and social repertoires for architecture and design.
Founded in 1956, the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts makes project-based grants to individuals and organizations and produces public programs to foster the development and exchange of diverse and challenging ideas about architecture and its role in the arts, culture, and society.
New Geographies is distributed by Harvard University Press. The most recent volumes available online are New Geographies 3: Urbanisms of Color, edited by Gareth Doherty and New Geographies 4: Scales of the Earth, edited by El Hadi Jazairy.
