Landscape technology project to be shown at International Garden Festival

The International Garden Festival at the Jardins de Métis of Quebec recently announced the selection of “Smart Small,” an entry by Niall Kirkwood, (professor of landscape architecture and technology), Jonghyun Baek (MLA ’10) and Yongkyu Kim (visiting scholar 2009-2010), as one of six competition winners.

Smart Small, developed by the GSD team in collaboration with ecoid, a research development and design office based in Seoul and Boston, is composed of 1,000 innovative small landscape technology units –cella – in which living mosses and herbs are grown. Festival visitors can take part in the creative process of planting and placing these experimental units within the site area.

Now in its 14th edition, the International Garden Festival has been recognized for experimental projects that address emerging site materials, new landscape technologies and innovative cultural programs. The competition attracted record 290 proposals from landscape architects, designers and artists of 31 countries.

Smart Small will be installed in June 2013 for the opening of the Festival and will be on display through the summer. Read more about the Festival.
