APA honors two Master in Urban Planning candidates with Abrams, McManus Price awards

The American Planning Association (APA) has announced two Harvard Graduate School of Design degree candidates are recipients of each of its two APA Foundation Scholarship awards: Gina Ciancone (MUP ’19) as recipient of the Charles Abrams Scholarship, and incoming Master in Urban Planning candidate Henna Mahmood (MUP ’20) as awardee the Judith McManus Price Scholarship.

Ciancone’s award marks the third time in six cycles that a GSD student has been awarded the Abrams prize, given to one student per year enrolled or accepted for enrollment at the graduate planning programs of Columbia, Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, New School University, or the University of Pennsylvania. Ciancone was recently honored at Harvard through the Seed for Change Program (SFC) at Harvard’s Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute. She and her collaborators are working on a project entitled “Green Screen,” a zero-electricity, modular ventilation panel made from an agricultural waste byproduct and designed for the slums of New Delhi, India.

Mahmood’s receipt of the McManus Price Scholarship marks the second year in a row that a GSD student has been honored with the prize; Carolyn Angius (MUP ’19) was one of the award recipients last year. The McManus Price Scholarship is awarded to women and minority students enrolled in an approved Planning Accreditation Board (PAB) planning program, with the intent to pursue careers as practicing planners in the public sector.
