Analysis and Design of Building Structures I

This course introduces students to the analysis and design of structural elements. Loads on structures are considered first; subsequent sessions cover the fundamental principles of statics and strength of materials, including basic concepts such as force, rigid body equilibrium, shear forces and bending moments, and stresses and deformations. The course continues with the analysis and design of trusses, arches, cables, and steel beams, using analytical methods and graphic-oriented computer programs. In a laboratory component, structural materials are tested for their mechanical properties.
