Description:
Everyday life troubleshooting is a celebration of resourcefulness. “Life hacking” is the term increasingly used for referring to day-to-day problem solving. In a similar way, the term “DIY” evokes a strong straight-forward approach to life. The Open Source movement has given the DIY ethos its most efficient emissaries: with the notion that knowledge should be accessible, shared and distributed on countless sources like YouTube videos and how-to web pages such as Instructables. We propose a 4-day course that will investigate modes of creativity, re-using typical standardized mass-produced items, turning them into something singular. As designers, we want to address whether those forms of appropriation can be designed within an intention or if it almost always remain and should remain a convergence of circumstances.
