Structural Design 2

A continuation of GSD 6227, this course provides students with an enhanced understanding of structural analysis and engineering design concepts. Students learn the fundamentals of the structural analysis and design of elements (trusses, arches, cables, shells, plates, and statically indeterminate beams and frames) and systems (funicular systems, bridge design, high rise building design, etc.) using a range of construction materials (structural steel, reinforced concrete, pre-stressed concrete, structural glass, etc.). The course relies partially on case studies of historic and recently completed projects throughout the world, and involves both quantitative as well as qualitative studies of structural systems geared towards producing outcomes that support, enhance and engage the architectural intentions. Students will develop an understanding for the collaborative design process necessary among engineering and architectural design professionals in the pursuit of real-world design applications.
