Sara Zewde (MLA ’15) has been recognized as the 2014 graduate level National Olmsted Scholar. The award is the highest honor in the Landscape Architecture Foundation’s Olmsted Scholars Program, the premier national award program for landscape architecture students.
Leif Estrada (MLA/MDesS in Urbanism, Landscape, Ecology) has received honorable mention in the 2014 National Geographic Award in Mapping for "Morphology: Synthetic Growth + Natural Decline." Estrada created his submission in the fall course “Maps and Mapping” taught by Charles Waldheim and Matthew Wilson.
A remarkable interdisciplinary team of 12 students representing all GSD departments worked with Andreas Georgoulias (research director of the Zofnass Program for Sustainable Architecture) to implement the Infrastructure 360 Awards. Students in the master in design studies risk and resilience, architecture, urban design and landscape architecture programs conducted detailed project assessments to uncover the most outstanding entries.
A team led by Daniel Daou (DDes 15) has won the 1st place in the 16th Arquine International Architecture Competition with the entry “Umbral de las Américas.” Collaborators include Elizabeth Añaños, Adriana Chavez (MArch II, MDesS 14), Oscar Malaspina (MAUD 13), Gabriel Morales (AA MArch 11), Nicolas Rivard (MAUD 12) and Einat Rosenkrantz (MAUD 13).
Research and proposals by students of the fall 2013 “Macau: Cross-border Cities” option studio are currently appearing in an exhibition at the Architecture School of Chinese University of Hong Kong. The studio, led by Christopher Lee (associate professor in practice of urban design) and teaching associate Simon Whittle, was the second of the 3-year research and design study on the future of the Chinese city, the AECOM Project on China.
Luis Callejas (lecturer in landscape architecture) and Lukas Pauer (MAUD '14) have recently co-authored an article entitled “Diving head first” in the first issue of We live in models, a multi-part publication of architectural theory about models, ruins and power.

In the spirit of creating new forms of collaboration to address contemporary design issues, on March 7 the Aga Khan Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Design celebrated its tenth anniversary by joining with academics and experts from MIT’s Aga Khan Program, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture to explore The Space Between Development and Conservation in the Muslim world.
A vision created by Chris Reed’s firm Stoss Landscape Urbanism in collaboration with SHoP Architects has been selected as the jury’s choice in the Dallas Connected City Design Challenge, initiated to reunite downtown Dallas and the Trinity River. GSD alums Amy Whitesides (MLA '12), Mariusz Klemens (MAUD '12) and Ellen Garrett (MLA '13) were on the Stoss team.
Xiaoxuan Lu (MLA ’12) has become a bit of a celebrity as a result of her YIXI talk (similar to TED Talks), combining her Penny White Fund research and her ASLA award-winning thesis.
