Anthony E. Malkin, “The Empire State ReBuilding: The Powerful Lessons from Reawakening the World’s Most Famous Office Building”
Watch the video on the GSD YouTube channel.
The Empire State Building is a global icon. In 2006, the building was a hollow shell of its prior glory, its interior largely untouched for 30 to 40 years. Mr. Malkin will discuss how the $550 million “Empire State ReBuilding” program transformed it into a 21st century trophy, serving the needs of tenants, broadcasters, and visitors with restored grandeur and the latest technology. Ground-breaking energy efficiency work integrated in the building has proven to be a disruptive model challenging the accepted definition of “green.” This retrofitting has raised questions as to the importance of the Empire State Building’s iconic status and its future development.
Anthony E. Malkin received his B.A. from Harvard College in 1985 and joined Malkin Holdings in 1989. He is now president of the firm and its affiliates, including W&H Properties. Mr. Malkin has been a leader in existing building energy efficient retrofits. He is a member of the Urban Land Institute, the Real Estate Roundtable and Chair of its Sustainability Policy Advisory Committee, the Advisory Council of the NRDC’s Center for Market Innovation, the Board of Governors of the Real Estate Board of New York, and a board member of the sustainable forestry management company Greenwood Resources.
