Center for Middle Eastern Studies: “The Struggle for the City: How Can Cartoons Fight to Preserve the Urban Space?”

A master class with Tunisian cartoonist _Z_: Leading up to the 2011 Tunisian revolution that toppled Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali’s autocratic regime _Z_’s satirical cartoons made him one of the most wanted targets of Tunisia’s secret services. He has remained anonymous as he continues denouncing the new government’s antidemocratic practices. Trained as an architect, _Z_’s work also criticizes development practices in his country. In this master class, _Z_ will discuss his works to combat overdevelopment in Tunis and teach participants how to draw a political cartoon.
