GreeceGSD Lecture: Irena Sakellaridou

Irena Sakellaridou holds a Dipl in Architecture from AUTh., a MArch from the University of British Columbia, and a PH.D from the Bartlett School of Architecture and Planning, University College London. She is currently an Associate Professor of Architectural Design at the School of Architecture AUTh. Her research focuses on creativity and the formation of architectural structures. She is a founding member of SPARCH SAKELLARIDOU / PAPANIKOLAOU ARCHITECTS. SPARCH focuses on innovative design for large-scale complex buildings. SPARCH has been the curator for the Cyprus Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2006 and has received more than 20 prizes in architectural competitions, among which 11 first ones. SPARCH’s architecture has received international recognition and has been extensively published in international reviews, among others in Phaidon Atlas of 21st Century Architecture. It has been exhibited in 36 exhibitions, such as at the Venice Biennale (1991), Milan Triennale (1995), DAM Frankfurt (1999), NAi Rotterdam (1999), RIBA London (2003), as well as in Paris (1989, 2004), Montreal, Tokyo and Barcelona. SPARCH has been awarded 12 international and national awards of architecture, such as: High Commendation by the World Architecture Festival 2008, the 2000 Award for Best Public Building as well as Special Mentions in 2008 and 2013 by the Hellenic Institute of Architecture (EIA), the Aris Konstandinides Award 2005, two Iconic Buildings Awards for “Concept: in Urban Planning” as well as for “Concept: Visionary Architecture” by the German Design Council (2013) and has been nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Prize of European Architecture in 2003 and 2008.
