Japanese Carpentry Tools Demonstration: Akinori Abo

A master carpenter from Japan, Mr. Akinori Abo, will hold a public demonstration of traditional Japanese carpentry tools – explaining the evolution and use of tools such as planes, chisels, saws, and other specialized tools from the historical set recently donated to the GSD by the Takenaka Corporation. GSD students in the audience will also be given the chance to test their skills in the use of these tools. A similar demonstration held over J-Term at the Center for Government and International Studies (CGIS) drew a large audience, and the April 1st event is a response to requests we’ve received for a repeat performance at the GSD… so please come by.

The tools demonstration is held in coordination with the exhibition “The Thinking Hand” (CGIS-South basement gallery, 1730 Cambridge Street), which ends this Friday, March 28. The exhibition includes the donated woodworking tools, interactive displays related to Japanese carpentry, and a full-scale replica of a Kyoto teahouse.
