Lecture: Iwan Baan

This lecture will not be webcast live or posted online.

Educated at the Royal Academy of Art in Amsterdam, Iwan Baan began as an architectural photographer after a proposal to Rem Koolhaas to document a project led to further work for OMA and subsequent projects with other architects, including Sou Fujimoto, Selgas Cano, SANAA, Morphosis, Frank Gehry, Toyo Ito, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, and Herzog & De Meuron. Baan’s work is marked by his attention to people, including the social context and environment around the architecture in his photographs. His images have appeared in the New Yorker, the New York Times, Domus, Abitare, and other publications. In 2010 he was the first recipient of the Julius Shulman Award for Architectural Photography, from the Julius Shulman Foundation at Woodbury University. His Torre David project, presented at the 2012 Venice Biennale with Urban Think Tank, won the Golden Lion prize and is also the subject of a book (with Lars Müller). Among his projects in progress are a book on the Setouchi islands in Japan (with Lars Müller and the Benesse Foundation) and No More Play with Michael Maltzan and USC, School of Architecture in Los Angeles on the city (Hatje Cantz).
