Ken Chongsuwat and Peichen Hao (both MLA I 15') earned honorable mention–the top award–in the Ecological Community competition of the Two World Community Foundation. Their advisors for the project were David Mah (lecturer in landscape architecture) and Chris Reed (associate professor of landscape architecture).
Michael Adlerstein LF '86, the assistant secretary-general in charge of the historic renovation of the UN Headquarters, hosted members of the Sert Council for a private tour of the newly unveiled landmark.
The Graduate School of Design is pleased to announce the appointment of Robert Gerard Pietrusko (MArch, ‘12) as Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning, effective July 1, 2014.
As chair of the GSD Alumni Council, Michael's ties to the School are strong. Since graduating in 1978, he has worked at various design offices, including Frank O. Gehry and Associates, before founding his own practice, Lehrer Architects, in 1985.
Janet Echelman (LF '08) will soon join Ross Miller (LF '93) as a featured artist along the Boston Greenway. Echelman’s floating sculpture will hover over the Greenway next year, suspended from neighboring buildings. Miller welcomes the company for his sculpture Harbor Fog, installed in 2009. Created from granite blocks of a seawall uncovered during construction, the boat-shaped form has lighting, fog and sound that respond to activity in the environment. Read more in the LOEBlog.
It should come as no surprise that Jennifer Siegal (LF ’03), whose Office of Mobile Design is known for sustainable design and innovative mobile structures, led a prize-winning team in the “Designing for Free Speech” challenge. OMD’s entry is Industrial Up-Cycling: the Pop-Up SoapBox, a movable flexible performance space made of recycled parts discarded by the aerospace industry. Read more in the LOEBlog
Ana Gelabert-Sanchez (LF ’11, MLA) was selected to be part of a team of international advisors working with Zhuhai, China, to assist the city in becoming “one of the most habitable environmentally friendly waterside cities in Asia.” Read more in the LOEBlog.
Krzysztof Wodiczko (professor in residence of art, design and the public domain) recently presented his work in a public lecture in Santiago, Chile, as part of the ARTS@DRCLAS Overseas Faculty Series. The talk was the first phase of the Designing for Civic Engagement: Instruments of Expression, Dialogue and Collective Critique research project, exploring alternative forms of informal learning using new design technologies.
Spread out across the globe to engage in summer research and employment, numerous GSD Urban Planning and Design students are embracing the bicycle as a means of commuting to work. Jonathan Goldman and Ginny Keesler (both MUP ’15) have encountered both challenges and rewards while cycling to their internships with the NYC Department of City Planning.
