Stefan Sauter

Stefan Sauter (b. 1990, San José, Costa Rica) studied at Universidad Veritas, San José, and completed his M. Arch II degree at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He joined Barkow Leibinger in Berlin in 2018, where his work has included design development of the New Hanszen College dormitory for Rice University, and competitions for the MIT Met renovation project, and the 1014 Space for Ideas in New York. He is responsible for research and public programming for Schaufenster, Barkow Leibinger’s in progress think tank and exhibition space.

Stefan’s curatorial and editorial work includes contributions to Countryside, the Future, curated by Rem Koolhaas, Troy Conrad Therrien, and Samir Bantal at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (2020–2021); In Our Present Condition curated by Laura Knott, Gediminas Urbonas, and Lars Bang Larsen at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2018); and Archaeology of the Digital: Complexity and Convention, curated by Greg Lynn at the Canadian Centre for Architecture (2016). In 2022, he participated in “The Terraforming,” a three-year design research program directed by Benjamin H. Bratton and Nicolay Boyadjiev at the Strelka Institute or Media, Architecture and Design in Moscow, until the program was interrupted by the invasion of Ukraine. Stefan is currently developing Shapeshifter, a multimedia platform that investigates emerging challenges for living beings, objects, technologies, and places, both constantly evolving and with a long memory.
