Cantrell coauthored the book with Justine Holzman, adjunct assistant professor in the graduate landscape architecture program at the University of Tennessee Knoxville's College of Architecture and Design, and a research associate for the Responsive Environments and Artifacts Lab at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. The authors will launch the book on Friday, March 4 at Invivia in Cambridge, where Cantrell is a design researcher.

In Responsive Landscapes, Cantrell and Holzman explore the various approaches taken to apply responsive technologies in current landscape-architecture practice. The book is organized into six sections, framing projects through a series of six terms: elucidate, compress, displace, connect, ambient, and modify. The result is a comprehensive view of landscape design projects using responsive technologies and their relationship to landscape and environmental space.

Case studies presented in Responsive Landscapes are global in scope and include projects from architecture, landscape architecture, computer science, and art that employ responsive technologies as mediators of landscape processes.

Cantrell's previous books include Modeling the Environment and Digital Drawing for Landscape Architecture, which won a 2012 ASLA Award of Excellence and has become a standard text for many landscape architecture programs.

The book launch for Responsive Landscapes will be held Friday, March 4, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at Invivia, 1684 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge.
