Kennedy, Knox, Sheldon, Australian, and Cheah Traveling Fellowships Application Information
Harvard University's Committee on General Scholarships oversees Traveling Fellowship opportunities for which GSD students may be eligible to apply. Restrictions apply based on year in school and citizenship, so please review eligibility carefully. Please review their website for a complete list of fellowships and applications at www.scholarship.harvard.edu/fellowships.html.
The more popular fellowship options are the Sinclair Kennedy Traveling Fellowship, the Frank Knox Memorial Traveling Fellowship, the Frederick Sheldon Traveling Fellowship, and the Australian Graduate Research Scholarship. These four opportunities, grouped together because they share a common application, have different requirements and focuses. In addition to reviewing the requirements of the application itself, please also review the timeline information below carefully. This information is specific to GSD applicants.
Application Timeline for the Kennedy, Knox, Sheldon, Australian Graduate, and Cheah Fellowships
November 7, 2013: Applicants must submit, by email (email@example.com) or on a CD (deliver to GSD, Gund Hall, 422 to the attention of Keith Gnoza), pdfs of the following materials by this date: A cover letter indicating your name, program at the GSD, and name of Fellowship you are applying for, destination, project period, statement of purpose, and the two names of individuals who will be providing letters of reference on your behalf (at least one should be a Harvard faculty member). The actual reference letters are not needed until the final deadline. In addition to the cover letter, applicants should provide well-thought out drafts of their project summary, project budget, and timeline. Submitted applications will be reviewed by select GSD faculty. This deadline is the first step in the process. Students who do not meet this deadline will not be eligible to enter the competition later. Late applications will not be accepted. Applicants will receive an email confirming receipt of the application.
December 19, 2013: Approximate date applicants will receive feedback from faculty review. Feedback will include comments and suggestions for improvement if the committee feels the application should proceed to the final phase.
January 27, 2014: Final applications, along with all required attachments (including letters of recommendation) are due in paper form to the GSD Office of Student Services, Gund Hall 422 by this date. Be sure to allow enough time to request academic transcripts from the GSD and other graduate schools you have attended, if applicable. Complete applications will be reviewed, approved, and ranked for submission to the Committee on General Scholarships (CGS), who will then consider applications from other schools at Harvard. Decisions will be made by the end of April. Rankings will in part be used to determine which applications will be submitted to the final review committee, if we are limited with the number of applications we can submit.
For additional questions, please contact Keith Gnoza (firstname.lastname@example.org) in the Office of Student Services, Gund 422, 617-495-5453.
Application deadlines are similar each year, so if you are ineligible for this year, or do not have time to prepare your application, you may keep it in mind for next year if you will again be enrolled.
Dr. Cynthia Verba has written a helpful resource that includes various successful fellowship applications that may be helpful with this process. The publication is called Scholarly Pursuits. Information about that publication is available at http://www.gsas.harvard.edu/current_students/scholarly_pursuits.php.
