Job Hunting During the Recession

Even during a recession, people are offered employment and begin new jobs. You cannot control the economy, but you can develop a number of strategies that will serve you well throughout your career. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Plan that your job search will take longer during a recession. When the economy is sluggish, it simply takes longer to find work.
  • Develop a plan A (your ideal job), as well as a plan B, C, and D. You will get to your plan A job - it may just take a few career steps in between.
  • Develop short and long term goals. Consider an immediate job to make money, and keep your professional job search going.
  • Utilize all of your alumni connections, both within the GSD as well as throughout Harvard University.

GSD students are encouraged to contact Career Services for help with resume and interview preparation. Email career@gsd.harvard.edu.

Advice from GSD Graduates

"First jobs are never perfect, often they are the opposite. Learn as much as you can and realize this is a first step in your career."

"Prepare an amazing portfolio."

"Rely upon your former teachers and employers - they know which firms are hiring and can put in a good word for you."

"It's not what you know, it's who you know. Talk to professors, critics, and fellow students."

"Look wide; utilize all of the resources at the university, including those outside of the GSD."

"Many jobs are last minute - don't panic if you don't get a job right away."

The Intern Development Program (IDP) is a comprehensive training program created to ensure that interns in the architecture profession gain the knowledge and skills required for the independent practice of architecture.

CLARB is the counterpart for landscape architects.

We are happy to announce that a group of GSD Alumni Council members have offered to volunteer as mentors to GSD students who are pursuing licensure. Please contact Meryl Golden for the list of volunteer mentors who will answer your questions about the licensure process.
