Bing Wang

Associate Professor in Practice of Real Estate and the Built Environment

Dr. Bing Wang is the Associate Professor in Practice of Real Estate and the Built Environment at the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University.  She is a faculty co-chair for the Real Estate Management: Design, Finance and Leadership program, a joint Executive Education program between the Harvard GSD and Harvard Business School, and a faculty co-chair for Advanced Real Estate Development program, the GSD’s advanced education for senior real estate executives. She has been a visiting faculty member at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom and lectures frequently at top-tier universities worldwide, including Tsinghua University in China and University of Ulster in the UK. She was the Area Head of the MDes Real Estate and the Built Environment concentration from 2010 to 2020.

Her scholarship and teaching address the interplays between formal representations of the built environment and its underlying capital forces, social structure, and economic engines. Dr. Wang sits on the editorial and editorial advisory boards of the Journal of Planning Theory and Practice (the UK), Journal of Sustainable Real Estate (the USA), The Encyclopedia of Ecological Culture (China), and The German Journal of Real Estate Research (Germany).

Her writings and research are published in more than thirty academic books and journals, including The Design of Real Estate: A Framework for Value CreationCities in TransitionUrban Form, Neighborhood Governance, and Real Estate Management; Building Green Infrastructure; The Evolving Real Estate Market Structure; Professionalism and ProfessionsUrbanization in China; Journal of Real Estate Portfolio Management, and others. Her books include Innovation Dynamics in Real Estate (forthcoming), Understanding China’s Real Estate Markets: Development, Finance, and Investment (2021), The Architectural Profession of Modern China (2011), Prestige Retail: Design and Development (2014), and Global Leadership in Real Estate and Design (2015).

Dr. Wang’s academic research and pedagogical focus are reinforced by her multi-disciplinary professional practice. She brings global experience as an investment advisor, developer, and principal of design, in multi-national real estate partnerships. She worked as an investment advisor at Lehman Brothers before founding her own real estate investment management firms with Citigroup, Starwood Capital, Cargill, PGA, and Rockpoint, as institutional shareholders. As of 2020, together with her companies and partnerships, Dr. Wang had master-planned 980 acres of land, designed 6.7 million sq. ft. of space for local communities, and invested US$1.1 billion in urban real estate assets and transactions. Her real estate partnerships and projects are located in the US, China, Germany, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore.

Her design firm, HyperBina Design Group, has undertaken projects of both architectural and urban scales. Most recent projects include the winning design proposal for the National Library of Israel in Jerusalem, the design of He’nan Public Security Institute Campus in Zhengzhou, a 400-acre communal neighborhood near Dianshan Lake in Shanghai, the value-creation design strategies for Yuyuan shopping mall in central Shanghai, a mixed-use project in Tbilisi, Georgia, and as an advisor for the design of temporary structures for Covent Garden in London.
