Places/Design Observer has just published three essays by David Heymann (MArch ’88). The first, “Landscape Is Our Sex” is on the strange rhetoric of landscape that architects use to justify design.
The second, “A Mound in the Wood” examines Adolf Loos’ essay “Architecture,” in order to clarify the odd advantage there is to landscape that can be gained by distinguishing between architecture and art.
The third, “The Evil, Evil Grain Elevator,” further explores the distinction between architectural and sculptural presence in landscape, re-visiting Robert Irwin’s classifications of object-site relationships and asking if these can reasonably be used to categorize buildings.
