Nader Tehrani (MAUD 91) appointed dean of Cooper Union’s Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture

Nader Tehrani (MAUD ’91), currently a professor of architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), has been appointed dean of the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. He will join Cooper later this month.

Tehrani joined MIT in 2007 and served as the head of MIT’s department of architecture from 2010 to 2014. Prior to that, he taught at the Harvard Graduate School of Design from 1998 to 2007. He has also taught at the Rhode Island School of Design, the Georgia Institute of Technology (where he served as the Thomas W. Ventulett III Distinguished Chair in Architectural Design), and the University of Toronto as the Frank O. Gehry International Visiting Chair.

Tehrani is principal of NADAAA, a practice dedicated to the advancement of design innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and an intensive dialogue with construction practices. He also was a founder and principal of Office dA.

Tehrani’s recent collaborations with the GSD include presenting the annual Aga Khan Public Lecture in 2012, and later that year, a lunchtime debate with the GSD’s Preston Scott Cohen, Gerald M. McCue Professor in Architecture.

Tehrani joins other GSD alums who have won deanships in recent years. Last August, Amale Andraos (MArch ‘99) was appointed dean of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP). Last October, Hashim Sarkis (MArch ’89) was named dean of MIT’s School of Architecture and Planning, after serving on the GSD faculty since 1998. Monica Ponce de Leon (MAUD ‘91) was appointed dean of Princeton University’s School of Architecture in June.

“We are delighted to welcome Nader Tehrani as dean of the Irwin S. Chanin School of architecture,” said Richard S. Lincer, chairman of The Cooper Union Board of Trustees. “Not only is he a highly respected designer whose work has been widely published and exhibited, but he is an academic leader who intermingles pedagogy and practice in a way The Cooper Union community can recognize and appreciate.”
