History of Landscape Architecture: Antiquity to 1800
This course surveys the history of gardens and landscape design primarily in the Western world, from antiquity to Humphry Repton and the beginning of the modern profession of landscape architecture. For each society and culture considered, the course seeks to set forth the relations found among designed forms, the determining political and economic structures, and parallel artifacts and activities such as cartography, landscape painting, and urbanism. Particular attention is paid to changes in territorial organization around urban centers, from feudal to capitalist societies.
