Managing the Design Project

Lecture course for 4 credits covering the management of projects. Pedagogical objectives include introduction to project management and leadership, project start up, owner/client relationships, project scoping, scheduling and budgeting, financial management of projects, design service fees and delivery, percent complete determinations, introduction to traditional project delivery approaches and alternate project delivery approaches, including bridging, fast-track, and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD); covers understanding and coalescing owner/client/designer/contractor relationships, design and construction processes, project risks and mitigation, life cycle costing, project close-out, commissioning, post-occupancy surveys, and other project management topics. Vital for MDesS Real Estate & Project Management and MArch students. Also valuable to students of Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, and others who want to increase their project management education and skills. The course is comprised of lectures, case studies and team project assignments. Expert guest speakers address specific topics. This course complements other real estate and project management, and professional practice-related courses offered at the GSD.
