Planning for the 21st Century: Emerging Trends, Challenges and Opportunities
What role does design play in the planning process? How will demographic and other emerging trends influence how we design and plan for communities for present and future generations? The seminar will provide an overview and implications of 20th and 21st century trends with a focus on planning for place, as well planning for people. The seminar will address the ethics and values in planning with an emphasis on social equity and other aspects of sustainability, both domestically and internationally. The seminar will consist of lectures, case studies, demographic research, group discussions and other assignments to illustrate how the role of planning is shifting in the future. Students will gain skills for the planning for the future by understanding projections, scenarios, participation techniques and implication assessments.
