Transportation Planning and Development
Access and mobility are essential elements of an urban plan. Transportation strategies directly impact and interact with land use planning, zoning, economic development, and urban design. This course will examine, through lectures, discussions, case studies, and exercises, the issues, analytical framework, tools, and skills involved with transportation planning. There will be an emphasis on a number of key areas of study: (1) transportation master planning, (2) parking demand and analysis, (3) transportation modeling, (4) highway capacity and level of service, (5) streetscape and geometrics, (6) intelligent transportation systems, and (7) mass transit systems. In addition, the course will expose students to national legislation and policies and new technologies that are having a direct influence on transportation systems and infrastructure. Cases and exercises will correlate these areas of transportation research and analysis with their relationships with land use and economic activity.
