“Easter Island: Designing Isolated Urban Ecologies” Lecture by Mario Marchant

Globalization, climate change, resource depletion, pollution, cultural crisis on extreme built environments are all issues that architecture discipline must address. The main challenge of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) today –a place that was built and lives on scarcity- is how to situate itself in the context of a global world and -at the same time- how to maintain the cultural richness of its ethnicity along with the vastarchaeological legacy of its territory. How to balance urban development and environmental protection?How to integrate global tourism and conservation of fragile and unique ecosystems? Are some key questions for Easter Island sustainable future. Considering that “Rapa Nui: 5 Ideas” is an interdisciplinary design-planning project between Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo, Universidad de Chile and the Municipality of Easter Island (Chile) where architects, designers and geographers worked together to generate proposals for the future development of the island, all of which were based on a complete multi-scale study for extreme territorial and sociocultural conditions
