Lecture: Vijay Iyer, “Framed Acts: Designing Space in Creative Music”

Vijay Iyer, who counts architecture as a “recurring point of reference, as a constructed (‘composed’) space that invites improvised acts,” is a composer, pianist, and producer. He holds an interdisciplinary PhD in the cognitive science of music and has published widely on music and mathematics. In 2012, he won four categories of the JazzTimes Critics Poll, the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, the Greenfield Prize, and, in 2013, the Echo Award for International Pianist of the Year. Historicity, one of his sixteen albums, was nominated for the 2010 Grammy for Best Instrumental Jazz Album. Iyer is a 2013 MacArthur Fellow, and as of 2014, he is the Franklin D. and Florence Rosenblatt Professor of the Arts in the Department of Music at Harvard University.
