Below are some frequently asked questions about student housing at the GSD. For more information, please contact Student Life.

Who is eligible for GSD housing?

GSD housing is available to incoming and continuing students who are enrolled full-time.

How many rooms are available to GSD students and where are they located?

40 single occupancy rooms will be made available to GSD students in HLS Housing. These rooms are located on the 2nd and 3rd floors of Holmes Hall. 

What are the move-in and move-out dates?

Academic Year 2024 – 2025

  • Move-in: Thursday, August 8, 2024 (for participants required to attend pre-term workshops)
    Thursday, August 22, 2024 (all others)
  • Move-out: May 13, 2025 (Residents who are receiving a degree at Commencement may remain in the halls until Friday, May 30, 2025, at 12:00 p.m.)

 

What is the fee and billing process?

Students will be termed billed $4,180.50 in the fall and spring semesters.    

What are the cancellation and rates policies?

Students may cancel by the end of June 30th free of charge. Cancellation requests received after June 30th will be charged a fee. All fees are applied to the student’s account.

Timelines and fees for hall room cancellation is as follows:

Cancel before 11:59 (EDT) June 30th = No cancellation fee or room fee.
Cancel before 11:59pm (EDT) July 15th = $500 cancellation fee and no room fee.
Cancel AFTER 11:59pm (EDT) July 15th = $1,000 cancellation fee and no room fee.
Cancellations received after fall classes begin are charged a cancellation fee of $2,500. The room fee remains on the student’s account.

Does HLS Housing accommodate partners, children, or pets?

No. The residence halls provide single occupancy rooms for individual students and cannot accommodate partners or children. Our residence halls are not pet-friendly or pet-conducive.
 

Are these rooms ADA accessible?

At this time, these rooms are not ADA accessible. If you require certain housing accommodations due to a disability or medical related issue, we encourage you to notify GSD Accessibility as soon as possible to discuss your housing needs.   

 

Will there be access to gender-neutral restrooms?

Although restrooms in Holmes Hall are not gender-neutral, residents have access to gender-neutral bathrooms in the following locations: 

Gropius Complex: 

  • Story Hall: 2nd floor, 4th floor 
  • Shaw Hall: 1st floor 
  • Ames Hall: 2nd floor 
  • Dane Hall: 3rd floor 

 

 

What are the furnishings and amenities?

Bedroom Furnishings 

  • Extra-long twin bed with built-in under bed storage 
  • Waste basket & recycle bin

Residence Amenities 

  • Communal bathrooms 
  • Communal kitchens are equipped with refrigerators, stove/oven, microwaves, and toasters. 
  • Access to laundry facilities in the basement of Shaw and Dane Halls. 

 

 

Are meal plans required?

Meal plans are not required. We recommend the Professional Student meal plan option for residents.  

 

If I submit my application on the first day the application opens, will I be guaranteed a room?

We are unable to make guarantees that everyone who applies for housing prior to the May 1 priority deadline will be given a room.  All applications are weighted equally and entered in a lottery. 

When will housing notifications be made?

Room allocations will be determined after the May 1 priority deadline. Student Life advises students to submit their application by the May 1 deadline in order to be included in the initial lottery. Applications received after May 1 will automatically be added to a waiting list. Room assignments will be announced by June 15.

Are there other housing options available at Harvard?

For students interested in off campus apartments without having to comb through listings or hire a realtor, Harvard University Housing (HUH) offers nearly 3,000 University-owned and -operated apartments throughout Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston. Most apartments operate on a fixed-term lease at market rate rents and include all utilities. 

Unlike on-campus housing, spouses, domestic partners, children, parents, and siblings are allowed to live in HUH apartments. HUH may also be available for faculty and staff.
