Students participate in annual PARK(ing) Day activism

On the morning of Friday, September 18th, a group of Harvard Graduate School of Design Urban Planning and Design students blocked cars from using a parallel parking space on a busy Cambridge street by creating a temporary park within its lines. Potted plants, hammocks, couches, and a dozen people occupied the asphalt normally reserved for SUVs and sedans. This transformation of public space was part of PARK(ing) Day, a national event dedicated to raising awareness about the lack of open space in cities.

Among the highlights of the office’s ambitious agenda for the coming year is expansion of the Community Service Fellowship Program (CSFP) in partnership with the Joint Center for Housing Studies (JCHS) of Harvard University.

Among the “9 Women Who Are Rocking Public Interest Design” listed in Architizer last week are 3 GSD alums and a Loeb Fellow. Liz Ogbu (MArch ‘04), Marika Shioiri-Clark (MArch ’11), Chelina Odbert (MUP ’07) and Deanna VanBuren (LF ’12) are in practice, in academia and even in prisons–building, convening, researching and listening to the needs of communities to tackle social problems on every continent. Ecosistema Urbano chosen to revitalize Centro Histórico de Asunción
