The Department of Landscape Architecture has announced the 2013 Project Awards for the Penny White Fund. Sixteen projects were selected for their originality and innovation, as well as their contribution to pressing challenges related to the fields of urbanism, landscape and ecology.
The International Garden Festival at the Jardins de Métis of Quebec recently announced the selection of “Smart Small,” an entry by Niall Kirkwood, (professor of landscape architecture and technology), Jonghyun Baek (MLA '10) and Yongkyu Kim (visiting scholar 2009-2010), as one of six competition winners.
The 2013 ULI Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition announced finalists last week, and again once again a team from Harvard is on the list. James Cody Birkey (MDesS), Robert Daurio (MArch), Maynard Hayden Leon (MArch), Cara Walsh (MLA) and Andrew Wisniewski (MLA), advised by Anita Berrizbeitia (professor of landscape architecture and director of the master in landscape architecture degree programs), created Connec+ Minneapolis, a long term development plan for the Downtown East neighborhood.
Charles Waldheim, the John E. Irving Professor and Chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture contributed a chapter “Detroit, Disabitato, and the Origins of Landscape” to an anthology of essays on urban abandonment.
Florian Idenburg’s (adjunct associate professor of architecture) firm SO - IL and Mass Design Group, founded by Michael Murphy (MArch '11) and Alan Ricks (MArch '10), have been named Emerging Voices 2013 by the Architectural League NY.
GSD students will display the wide range of the school's research when Penn State holds its 1st "Nature of Spatial Practices" conference this Friday. The conference will examine how spatial practice, education and political discourse are responding to recent changes in technology, mobility and socio-cultural patterns.
“Cartographic Grounds: Projecting the Landscape Imaginary” lives on in Places with an essay by Jill Desimini (assistant professor of landscape architecture). The exhibit, which ran through December 19 at the GSD, looks back at the historical roots of mapmaking and forward to anticipate the potential of new technologies. The images now in the Places gallery are descriptive, ingenious and beautiful.
Chris Reed (adjunct associate professor of landscape architecture) and Eric Höweler (assistant professor of architecture) are making news again. Reed’s firm Stoss Landscape Urbanism with partners Höweler + Yoon were just short-listed for the Movement on Main design competition in Syracuse, NY.
Loeb fellows and GSD faculty are applying their talents to the challenges of revitalizing Detroit in the Detroit Works Project. Toni Griffin (LF 1998 and adjunct associate professor of urban planning) led the Detroit Works’ technical team and Dan Pitera (LF 2005 and associate professor of architecture), director of Detroit Collaborative Design Center, oversaw community outreach. “(Re)Mapping Health,” a new interdisciplinary initiative of the GSD and the School of Public Health was launched last week with support from the President's January Innovation Fund.
