The value of ugliness: Timothy Hyde on the Southbank Centre

Timothy Hyde (associate professor of architecture) has published his essay “Piles, Puddles, and Other Architectural Irritants” in the current issue of the journal Log. The latest in a long sequence of proposed ideas for the renovation of the Southbank Centre in London has just been presented to the public. Hyde examines this persistent desire to “fix” the brutalist icon in order to speculate on the possible significance of ugliness for a metropolitan audience.

MDesS students are 2013 CASE semi-finalists

TThe initial results of the MIT Case Competition 2013 were released this afternoon, and GSD students have made the semi-finals. Two teams of MDesS students concentrating in Real Estate and the Built Environment have been invited to submit proposals and compete before judges and industry professionals. Jason McAlees, Dylan Lazovik, Andrea Raynal and Carly Jane Zapernick are on the first year team. The second year team includes Julie Zelermyer, Andre White, Vaibhav Jain and Min Zhou.

Hult Prize Honorable Mention for GSD students

A team representing the GSD, Harvard School of Public Health and Kennedy School has secured an honorary mention in the 2013 Hult Prize competition for creatively using design as the medium for social entrepreneurship to address food insecurity in urban slums. The team (from left in the photo above) included Venkata Krishna Kumar Matturi, Conor O'Shea and Ghazal Jafari (MDesS candidates) working with Yogeeta Manglani (MSc, HSPH) and  Varun Bhandari (MPA, HKS).

Krzysztof Wodiczko exhibit opens in Prague

“Out/Inside(rs),” a comprehensive show of the work of Krzysztof Wodiczko (professor in residence of art, design and the public domain), opened last week at DOX Centre for Contemporary Art in Prague. The exhibit is the artist’s first in the Czech Republic and includes documentation of his projections on public buildings throughout the world and other installations.

Landscape technology project to be shown at International Garden Festival

The International Garden Festival at the Jardins de Métis of Quebec recently announced the selection of “Smart Small,” an entry by Niall Kirkwood, (professor of landscape architecture and technology), Jonghyun Baek (MLA '10) and Yongkyu Kim (visiting scholar 2009-2010), as one of six competition winners.
