Architecture Fellowships, Prizes, & Travel Programs

Awarded annually by the GSD in recognition of a multi-family housing design that incorporates the most interesting ideas and/or innovations that may lead to socially oriented, improved living environments. The prize may be awarded for a design executed by a single student or by several students working in collaboration in a regular GSD core or option studio, thesis, open projects or independent study course completed during the award year.

Awarded annually by the GSD to a graduating student who has demonstrated the most creative and rigorous use of computation in relation to the design professions.

Awarded annually by the UPD Department to a GSD student who demonstrates excellence in the design of urban environments through relevant studio and coursework. The fellowship provides the recipient with the opportunity for extensive, research-based travel in the US and abroad to enrich their design education and professional development.

Awarded annually by the LA Department to two GSD students who have the strongest project proposals. The residency program provides fundings for a six-week residency, where recipients live and work in the certified organic farm, gardens, and park at the Château de Courances, a sixteenth-century estate located in the Île-de-France, fifty kilometers south of Paris.

The Irving Innovation Fellowship offers students graduating with GSD master’s degrees an opportunity to extend their research and discovery in design, architecture, urban design, and landscape architecture and continue contributing to the GSD’s pedagogy and dialogue.

The Paul M. Heffernan International Travel Award funds GSD students who want to travel internationally to focus on professional development related to their academic pursuits.

Awarded annually by the Joint Center for Housing Studies to honor exemplary graduate student work on housing, community development, or related urban issues.

Student papers are nominated by faculty members and selected by the Joint Center.

The Penny White Project Fund annually awards up to $50,000 in project funding for student-submitted research proposals. The call is open to all graduate, postgraduate, and doctoral students at the GSD.

Awarded annually by the GSD to honor students of exceptional promise in the school’s architecture and advanced degree programs who have proven their competence and innovation in advancing architecture and structural engineering.

The Plimpton-Poorvu Design Prize is awarded annually to an individual or team whose project, completed as part of their GSD curriculum, best demonstrates feasibility in design and construction and fulfills market and user needs.

Awarded annually by recommendation of the faculty to a graduating architecture student in the MArch I program who has shown the highest average of excellence throughout the course of study in the program.

Awarded annually to a graduating architecture student who has shown an ability for leadership, performed willing service for his/her school and department and gives promise of real professional merit through attitude and personality. The medal is given by Alpha Rho Chi, the national professional architectural fraternity

Awarded annually to a continuing student of merit who has successfully completed the MArch I or MArch I AP core program and whose design work consistently shows outstanding promise. The award provides a one-year full tuition fellowship.

Awarded annually by faculty to a graduating architecture student in the MArch I program in recognition of their academic achievement throughout their course of study.

Awarded annually by recommendation of the faculty to one graduating student in both the MArch I and MArch II programs in recognition of their significant achievement throughout the program’s design sequence in their respective programs.

Awarded annually by nomination of the faculty for the best final design project submitted by a MArch degree candidate. The prize is awarded by the Boston Society of Architects, a chapter of the AIA.

Awarded annually by the department to a graduating architecture student in the MArch II program in recognition of their attainment of the highest level of academic achievement among students graduating from the program.

The Department of Architecture offer two MArch I or MArch I AP students, in their 4th or 6th semester, the unique opportunity to study Architecture at one of the leading European Architecture Schools located in Zurich, Switzerland

Awarded annually to one graduating architecture student in either the MArch I or MArch II program. The fellowship is awarded based on academic record at the GSD, travel proposal, and a portfolio of work done at the GSD.

Kohn Pedersen Fox Foundation (KPF) annually awards students who are in their penultimate year funding for students to broaden their education through a summer of travel before their final year at school. Students from twenty-seven design schools with whom KPF has chosen to partner are eligible to be nominated.

Students are nominated by the department.

The Paul Katz/KPF Fellowship is a competitive award established and administered by the KPF Foundation in honor of the life and work of former KPF President Paul Katz. Two awards of US$25,000 are given each year to assist internationally-focused students in traveling and studying issues of global urbanism.

MArch and MAUD students in their final year are selected by faculty committee to apply.

Awarded by faculty committee each fall semester to an architecture student in their second year of study to travel to Rome, Italy. The financial award is intended to offset costs related to student travel and living expenses for up to three months.

Continuing (non-graduating) students in the MArch I and MArch II programs are eligible to apply to three-month summer internship at the Takenaka Corporation’s Architectural Design division of its Tokyo headquarters.
