The GSD remembers David Nelson (MCRP ’78), who passed away on May 2, 2026, at the age of 73. A dedicated urbanist and rail expert, David had an accomplished 48-year career improving commuter rail services across 24 states and 12 countries.
David led national Transportation Research Board committees on urban rail transit, commuter rail, and light rail. His research was widely published in transportation journals, and his professional legacy includes service design for relaunching the Old Colony commuter rail lines and expanding service with new stations on the Fairmount Line.
David will be remembered for his generosity, passion, and deep intellectual curiosity. His impact will continue to be felt by the many he taught and the communities he served.
David is survived by his beloved children, siblings, cousins, nieces, and nephews, and his wife, Kay O’Neil (MCRP ’78), whom he met while studying at the GSD.
